Modoc Country Living Night Life
Country living can include enjoying night life as well as the peace and quiet of the country. Although obviously not on the scale of Reno or San Francisco, Alturas and Modoc County does have grown-up entertainment venues. Dining, dancing, movies and casino gaming are all centrally located within Modoc County. I trust this page will help you find grown-up country living entertainment opportunities in this area.
If dinner and a movie are your preference for enjoying an evening of country living, the Niles Theater in Alturas offers first-run evening movies on Friday and Saturday nights and an afternoon matinee on Sundays (Sunday night showings are added during the summer months). There are also numerous good restaurants in Alturas, all within easy driving range of anywhere in the county. A lot of folks in Modoc County and surrounding areas choose The Brass Rail Basque restaurant in Alturas for those special occasion meals, and also for special banquets and get-togethers. The Brass Rail has a cocktail lounge, and the dining room opens at 5:30 P.M., making timing just about right for an evening movie at the Niles. Evening entertainment for a lot of people is a Friday evening prime rib dinner (best I've ever tasted!) at Antonio's Cucina Italiana, a hop across the street for a movie at the Niles, then finish the evening off with a chance at the slots and a night-cap at The Desert Rose Casino.
As The Desert Rose Casino also often features live entertainment in the lounge, your country living night life enjoyment could include dancing to a live band or catching a comedy act from Reno instead of a movie. If your tastes lean to a more home-style atmosphere for your dinner out, you can try the Country Hearth in Cedarville, the Likely Café in Likely or The Wagonwheel Restaurant in Alturas. International flavor is also available in the county, including Chinese and Cantonese, Thai and Mexican. Of course, if you are visiting from out of town, the first order of business may be to secure your evening's headquarters before enjoying Modoc's
night life.
Perhaps not commonly thought of as country living night life, the arts provide entertainment for many people. The Modoc Performing Art Theatre (MPAT) players present contemporary plays throughout the year which are well received. The performances are normally held at the Niles Theater in Alturas. Another country living attraction here is The Art Center on South Main in Alturas. The Art Center gallery has art in various mediums by local artists on display as well as many for sale. Occasional performances by the visiting Klamath Falls Symphony Orchestra are also presented in Alturas for concert goers. If your night life agenda includes something more on the literary side, such as poetry or good books, a place to start may be in Cedarville at Floating Island Books & Publications.
Many people simply enjoy a quiet drink away from home after a hard day's work on the farm or ranch. To satisfy these thirsty folks, there are numerous watering holes serving up adult beverages in Modoc country. Whether it's a cocktail or a cold beer, you can enjoy a few quiet night life hours at such diverse places as Benny's or the Brass Rail in Alturas, the Golden Bar & Restaurant in Cedarville or take a step back in time at the Likely Saloon in Likely.
Modoc County and its small towns are typical of many rural country living areas of the U.S. These areas aren't usually alive with night life options although people don't usually live in the country for its abundance of night life. Anyone whose recreation must include such night life options as multi-screen cinemas, Broadway style theater, 24/7 casinos or four and five star dining options should consider settling in a more metropolitan area. Country living does include its share of night life, but in moderation and limited scope.
I’ve found that most people in the country adhere to a slower pace of life, even when it comes to enjoying night life recreation. Country living night life usually consists of a enjoying Pay-Per-View movie on a cold wintry night or enjoying the sunset from the comfort of your front porch on a summer evening. Of course, if you get a hankering for a cool night-cap while sitting on the front porch, you could always pop over to Benny's!
