Modoc Country Living - Modoc Recreation
Modoc recreation offers numerous options from camping to nightlife, and from dining to a movie. This and associated pages provide a guide to your recreation opportunities.
Modoc recreation is synonymous with outdoor activities. Because of our remote location and sparse population, there is lots of room for camping, hiking, hunting and fishing. In short, if your recreation activity of choice requires open space or the outdoors you can enjoy it in Modoc County! A large portion of Modoc's land is under federal stewardship in the form of national forest and Bureau of Land Management (BLM)-managed open land. As such, there are numerous established campgrounds and campsites throughout the county, most open from June-October. Some campgrounds remain open during the off-season but with reduced services. The U.S. Forest Service operates and maintains campgrounds and campsites in the Modoc National Forest that are available so you can enjoy outdoor
Modoc recreation.
Most federal campgrounds can accommodate RV's and camp trailers. For those who enjoy roughing it without the comfort of paved parking, restrooms and established fire pits, there are many areas of BLM-managed land suitable for camping and hiking. Some restrictions, most notably fire, apply on this land, so always check with the local BLM Office prior to embarking on an excursion. There are also many National Parks with hiking trails here to enhance outdoor Modoc recreation. If you aren't up to leaving your vehicle for very long while enjoying Modoc's sights, there are also many scenic roads and highways in the county, including large portions of the officially sanctioned Modoc Volcanic Scenic Byway and Emigrant Trails Scenic Byway.
Modoc recreation also offers a paradise for hunters and fishermen. Many hunters have already discovered Modoc's abundant wildlife. Larger game such as black-tailed and mule deer, pronghorn antelope, elk and the occasional black bear may be hunted in season. Game birds and waterfowl including quail, ducks and geese are also abundant during their respective seasons. If your weapon of choice is a Nikon, you'll find many targets in Modoc's wildlife refuges. For anyone new to the world of gamebirds and waterfowl, visit this website for detailed information on
gamebirds.
Modoc County also offers other outdoor activities including golf, off-roading and seasonal skiing and snowboarding at Cedar Pass Snow Park.
Although not as glamorous and extensive as Reno, Las Vegas or San Francisco, Modoc recreation also offers a sampling of nightlife. Whether you're looking for a nice dinner, a movie or a nightcap, you can find it in Modoc County. Adin, Cedarville and Alturas all offer good restaurants for dinner, including The Brass Rail and Antonio's Cucina Italiana. (By the way, on Friday nights Antonio's serves the best prime rib I've ever tasted!).
For that movie date, Niles Theater in Alturas shows first-run movies on weekends in a historic 1950's style theater. If you're looking for a nightcap to top your Modoc recreation evening off, Bennie's or The Brass Rail in Alturas can pour your drink of choice. You can also enjoy Modoc recreation in a 'Vegas-like environment at The Desert Rose casino on the outskirts of Alturas. The Desert Rose offers slots, table games, a full-service bar and frequent live entertainment.
A lot of Modoc recreation activities are family-oriented. From the Juniper Berry Parade on New Year's day in Davis Creek to the Balloon Fest in September, there are events that the whole family will enjoy all year long. Some popular annual family-oriented events in Modoc County include Modoc Super Bull bull riding and the Modoc District Fair at the fairgrounds in Cedarville, and Fandango Days Fourth of July parade, car show and festivities in Alturas.
By enjoying this page and following pages, I think you'll agree that Modoc recreation offers options for just about everyone. Whether you're seeking dinner and a movie for you and your date, looking for a refreshing cocktail or trying to tag that big buck, you can do it in the clean air and relaxed atmosphere found with Modoc recreation.
